Rated 5 out of 5 by Stable, yet light weight and comfortable Old ankle injuries have left me with little lateral strength. I need a shoe with great stability without the bulk. I run mostly on trails and gravel roads,so terrain is uneven. The Masochist fit(my flat foot) out of the box,is very stable and surprisingly light. I have only run in them 5times,so can't testify to their durability yet. I would definitely get another pair. November 11, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Not like the ii's I have loved the Masochist's ever since they came out. The new iii's gave me a huge blister on a training run right out of the box. I have never gotten a blister with the Masochist's before and have literally slapped on a new pair at the start of several 100 milers. They also don't feel as comfortable on my feet as the ii's. Rated 3 out of 5 by Just Not The Same as My II's Pros: The newest incarnation of the greatest trail shoe ever made - the MMII. Now offered in a Red. What! Had to order a pair. Cons: The shoelaces are 6" shorter than the laces on my MMII. There wasn't enough lace to tie a heel lock using the last eyelet, and forget about trying to double knot. I found out that it's impossible to find the proper size/application replacement laces in my town, even at the specialty running stores. So I ended up just using the laces from my MMII instead. The gray looks good on the red and I get to carry some of that magic juju forward on my new kicks. Biggest Con: The III don't have the same snug in the heel and midfoot and roomy in the toebox feel of my II's. They feel more uniform from heel to toe. I can't speak to whether the fit of the shoe was changed, or if I just got a funky fitting off pair, but regardless my feet suffered for it during their first run. I did some light treadmill work to break them in and they felt fine. But hitting real trails for a 9-mile run involving steep and technical terrain exposed some major faults in the shoe. During descents, my feet kept sliding forward in the shoe just slightly enough to where my left big toe kept hitting the front of the shoe. By the end of my run, the pain was unbearable and my toenail was a bit loose #yes they were trimmed#. During climbs, I noticed a hot spot developing on my right heel that eventually tore the skin. I used the same socks I always have, so it wasn't the socks. I'll have to give them another shot and will try tweaking the lacing and tightness to hopefully alleviate the problems mentioned above. Though I admit I'm a bit hesitant to put my feet through that again. If that doesn't work, maybe I can hawk 'em on Ebay to recoup some money. Honestly, my experience with them so far is a 1, but I still gave a 3 because I realize individual fit can be a finicky thing and they are still quality shoes. Just not for this guy. August 23, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Still a Top notch trail shoe The MMIII is still my go to shoe for rugged trail runs. I put many miles on multiple pairs of the MMII and a was a bit concerned that they were going to the III. but my nervousness turned to joy when I got my first pair of MMIII's and went for a 2 hour technical trail run. the traction is still the best and the upper seems to be a better fit. They Drain real well in wet conditions and the rock plate is stiff enough not to feel rocks but not to stiff to where it feels like a boot. They are not as light as other trail shoes (other trail shoes don't have as much going on and are striped down) but I still prefer these for race days because I trust them with every step I take. The Mountain Masochist will be my go to trail shoe as long as they keep making them!! July 20, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by It's Still A Mountain Masochist! A worthy successor to the Mountain Masochist II. A few changes to the upper. The lacing no longer has that annoying grommet at the toe (which I bypassed to keep the laces from pulling the toebox down), and unfortunately they have removed that extra-wide band on the side and the ultra suede strap on the tongue which made the shoes feel so great and held the foot firmly on steep downhills. That said, they still perform really well even if the lacing feels a little trickier to dial in. The weight of the pair I have is odd, with one shoe being lighter than my MMII, and the other being much heavier than my MMII. The tread pattern is the same as the MMII, so it picks up lots of mud, but really grips well. As much as I hate the mess they can make, I have really come to trust them to give traction in all conditions and wouldn't trade that. Overall the fit and ride is that of a Mountain Masochist. Protective, but surprisingly nimble. Exactly what I have come to know and love. July 10, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Reliable as always Montrail was recommended to me when I first started trail running many years ago. I've been away from the game for several years recovering from knee surgery. This year I'm back, and I got talked into doing the Spartan Super in Monterey. I have an excellent pair of Aku hiking boots, but they were not what was needed for this event. I went with my tried and true choice Montrail. I ordered the Masochist III after reading several reviews just to be on the safe side. They arrived promptly and the fit was even better than before. Sizing runs true for me. On the trail and while crossing the many obstacles the Masochist III performed superbly. I had excellent traction both descending and ascending hill sections, I developed no hot spots, drainage after complete submersion in water & mud was quite good for a non water specific design. Support was good through the arch, and the heel cup kept the shoe firmly attached to my foot. Cushioning is also good, but the foot plate seems to be a bit more flexy than on older models. This may be a design feature since I did notice I had a much better 'feel' for the ground I was running on. June 11, 2015

Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfect Shoe A few years ago I was in Montana and needed a good trail hiking shoe I could also use back home in Florida. I fell in love with the Mountain Masochist and have not bought another brand since. April 15, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by good quality but doesn't fit me The quality and look of it are both great, however, although I ordered my size (12) it isn't a great fit. Maybe the size is a little different than other brands, but size 12 on most of the brands will fit me well. Unfortunately I will need to return it. April 10, 2015
