/ MOUNTAIN MASOCHIST™ II

Fellow Trail Runners,
Just when you feel your feet are revolving doors. You find that one magical pair of shoes. Right out of the box they have not let me down. I have worn them during the east coast winter and out to the southwest desert and my feet are still entranced with the cushioning, grip, and top quality. It's like I'm wearing miniature 4x4's on my feet without the weight or bas gas mileage.
Montrail Genius Shoe Developers/Montrail Excutives,
Hybrid shoes are great but you gotta keep the hardcore break glass trail shoes in the Montrail arsenal. Understand there are many like me who are entranced with the quality of these products. I would like to see the Mountain Masochist X. With every other year providing additional tweaks to my custom 4x4 runners.

I love the fit of this shoe! I usually wear custom orthotics but I can wear this shoe without orthotics when I'm just out and about. It has great arch support. However, I do wear my orthotics when I'm running in them. My only complaint is that some of the lugs/tread is starting to come off and I only have around 100 miles on the shoe. I was able to solve the problem with shoe glue, but I also had a similar problem with a different Montrail shoe a couple of years ago. I will run in these as long as they hold up. Planning to do a trail 50K with these in March. The grip is amazing in mud or on rocks! Has plenty of cushion and protection, but not too beefy of a shoe for me. I will consider purchasing another pair, but this is the 2nd Montrail shoe that I've worn and had problems with the sole and tread. Not a big deal but an area that Montrail should try to improve. Awesome fit!

I've owned 3 pairs of the Mtn Masochists and this is a great trail running shoe. Another reviewer commented on the lack of durability and I couldn't disagree more. Each pair that I've owned has seen 500 miles of everything from aggressive single track to the occasional road miles and they've all held up very well. My latest pair has lots of miles on them and once I retired them from running I began using them for hiking and backpacking. After a summer of hard use hiking/backpacking they are still in great shape. Others didn't mention this but I think the shoe definitely runs on the small side. I've had to order a 1/2 size up in all 3 pairs that I've owned and would probably go up a full size if I were wearing them for anything longer than a marathon.

I did 50 miles on the PCT through Oregon. The treads are already separating from the foam sole. One section of tread on the heel fell off. A friend using the montrail badger lost the entire heel section on the same trail. The pack added 40 lbs but I wasn't running or doing extreme trekking. I expect to pay $10-15 for single-use trekking shoes.

I just recently used the Masochist (1) for Tough Mudder and they performed amazingly. I had grip in some of the muddiest areas and I never lost grip on the steepest of climbs. I'm using them again for this summer's Tough Mudder. The shoes gave me no problems what so ever; unlike many, many other people on the course who's shoes were cutting them. Mine stayed in place and did not let me down at all. Best part is I washed them and they look new again. This is my 2 pair or Montrail shoes and will not be my last.

Montrail has a great shoe in the Mountain Masochists. I've run in these shoes regularly over the last 3 years. Day in and day out, this shoe has never disappointed me. I would highly recommend them.
