Awesome Trial Runner

These shoes are awesome! I have narrow, size 15 feet. Finding shoes that fit well can be a huge problem! The Fluid Balance holds my heel and arch nicely. The toe box gives me room to stretch my toes on a long run but is tight enough that it doesn't feel sloppy. The grippy tread works well on everything I run on--rocks, roots, mud, creeks. The lighter material drains well and doesn't hold in the heat! If you liked the Fairhavens, you will Love these shoes!!

This shoe is AWESOME

I have enjoyed this shoe a whole heck of a lot since I got them a few weeks ago. Its light, it's soft, the posting isn't noticeable, and the toe box is wide, allowing for good toe splay. This shoe is a great hybrid shoe. It handles the road well, but does well on rolling downhill. It is grippy enough so that you are secure on technical uphill and downhill, but not so grippy that you cant pivot on switchbacks on technical downhill. I've ran for up to about 4 hours in this shoe and really tried to beat it up on the downhill. Tread is holding up fine. Overall a great update from Montrail. And its only 100 bucks!!! I will absolutely get this shoe again.

Excellent Update

I think this shoe is the best update in years from Montrail. While the fit is slightly off, running about a half size too small, the upper has been improved to wrap the midfoot much better without the "poofyness" in the arch area that the Fairhaven had. The midfoot does a nice job supporting the foot while still leaving a nice wide toe box for forefoot comfort. Softer midsole is an improvement for the hot, dry trails where I live and the improved fit of the upper actually has made this a more responsive shoe while still giving me the support that I need for all day runs on the trail. Nimble enough for technical running and smooth enough for faster descents and flat running.

Some nice updates from the Fairhaven

Overall, I like the direction that Montrail took the Fairhavens to. The upper has definitely been lightened from the Fairhaven, yet is still a really secure fit. I size a little snug for fast, technical trail running, and while a size 10 worked in the Fairhavens, a size 10 in the Fluid Balance is just a touch too small. The midsole is very cushy, almost too cushy for a shoe with stability features. The Fluid Balance has a noticeably softer midsole than what the Fairhaven had, which will lighten it up nicely, but may not make for as long lasting of a shoe vs. the Fairhaven. Basically, the Fluid Balance is the Fairhaven with a lightened uppper and softer midsole, with the same posting zone and outsole. Great shoe for the trail (and some road) runner needing a little support. Hoping Montrail keeps the upper while going to a little harder midsole like the Fairhaven had.
