Annette Bednosky

Annette Bednosky, Endurance Runner

Hometown: Jefferson, NC

Favorite Sports Team: It’s a tie between the Montrail UltraRunning Team and Ashe County Huskies Cross Country Team.

Other Sports or Activities: quilting, gardening, walking, biking, snowboarding, canning, road running, cooking, adventure racing, learning different languages, I’ll try ALMOST anything (except for eating rodents and insects and lima beans and cooked peas), I love LIVING this life!

Real (Primary) Job: High School Counselor

Best Trail Running Memory of 2009: Running with complete abandon for the first time in over a year on the downhill switchback part of the AT on route to Weverton Cliffs during JFK 50. A complete feeling of freedom and flight! Ahhhh joyousness! Thank you to the runners who gave me the right-of-way and allowed me to run in this style! When I feel like this –I know I am ALIVE and am deeply reminded that I can deal with the good and hard things life presents!

Favorite Trail Ultra: This changes on my mood! I really like American River 50 for it’s large field and diverse surfaces. You have to be smart. Though I have run it fairly well, it has kicked my butt and I want to learn to run it smarter and faster!...Also-David Horton’s Hellgate 100k is right up there! 64+ miles starting at 12:01 am in mid December in the central Appalachian Mountains. Almost all dirt and leafy covered rocks-unless there is snow on top of those leafy covered rocks. At any rate this race is darn tough and VERY magical!

Beer or wine: If you really twist my arm: red wine. George and I “homebrew” both!

Trail Shoe of choice and why: Mountain Masochist. I wear men’s size 9. It is light, comfy, and can cross over from dirt road to rooty, rocky trail. This shoe compliments my minimalist ideal of not having to own too much stuff! I have also run 2 non-technical marathons this year in this shoe and have had happy feet!

Objective #1 for 2010: To stay strong and not get hurt!

Best race in 2009: World Challenge 24-Hour in Bergamo, Italy. This was my 1st time as a member of Team USA, 1st international competition, and 2nd 24-hour run. I was fascinated and “green”. I trained smartly and ran well. (129.62 miles -2nd place for US and 9th in World). This reminds me that with focused preparation, even as a “newbie to the distance can perform well! I loved having strong, supportive teammates and found the giving and receiving of support from all teammates and crew to be spectacular!

Person Who has Influences You the Most: Mary Lou Bednosky. She is my awesome Mom. She is honest, warm, generous, talented in gardening, human relations, surviving, and thriving! She is an enduring role model that reminds me to give and receive and have patience and respect for myself and others! (She doesn’t “get” ultra running-yet still supports me through her interest, encouragement and concerns!

When I’m Not Running I Prefer to... Stay sane! Seriously-I’ve had my share of injuries and so when I don’t run –I seek to take life as it comes an remind myself that life is sooo much greater than running and racing. (Sounds like a no brainer-yet ultra running is a real passion for me-and passions can sometimes tip the scales of common sense!) I think increased age may be bringing me a bit more of increased common sense!

If A Genie Would Grant Me One Wish: Acquire a magic wand to help some of the teens I work with to FIND A REASON to change there unproductive/unhealthy behavior patterns….

When in Need of Rest and Relaxation I... practice moderation: Run and sleep and create and cook and eat and walk and hang out with George…often this involves getting away from home where there is always 500+ things to accomplish and go hide is a state park cabin for 2 days: hiking, boating, running, cooking, connecting: No TV, internet or phone!
